A Vespa scooter engine will fall into either the two stroke or four stroke category, with vintage machines featuring the older, two stroke version. Two stroke engines produce more emissions than a four stroke, but provide more power for the same engine displacement size and are easier to modify. Four stroke engines have much better emissions control, and provide a smoother, quieter ride. Larger scooters with engine displacement over 200cc are all four stroke.
