What Is Scooter Engine Displacement? A Guide to Scooter Engine Sizes

When shopping for a scooter, one of the first specifications you'll see is engine displacement. You might see scooters listed as 50cc, 125cc, 150cc, 170cc, or even larger. But what do those numbers actually mean?

Scooter engine displacement refers to the total volume of air and fuel that an engine's cylinders can draw in during a complete cycle. It is measured in cubic centimeters, or “cc.”

In general, a larger engine displacement allows an engine to produce more power and torque. However, engine size isn't the only factor that determines how fast a scooter can go or how it performs.

Understanding engine displacement can help you choose a scooter that fits your riding needs, whether you're looking for an economical scooter for city riding, a commuter capable of keeping up with faster traffic, or something with more power for longer rides.

No. Engine displacement does not determine a scooter's exact top speed.

  • Wheel and tire size

  • Manufacturer's recommended use

A well-designed 125cc scooter may be a better fit for one rider than a larger-displacement scooter simply because it better matches how and where they ride.
